Another suggestion would be to take onboard someone who can take interested guests for a half day trek to old Barog tunnel. If I wanted to go and see Kasauli, there are plenty of options to stay as well. Upon asking places to see in Barog they advise you to go and see Kasauli. Second, train your hotel staff to at least tell good things about Barog. It’s very high and in no way justifiable. Coming on to some suggestions for the management first, please bring down the food prices. As I said in order to maximize their revenues, the hotel doesn’t provide complimentary breakfast unless you book them for minimum 2 nights which in my opinion is too long a stay at Barog. Since, it is at some height, you may not want to go down and climb back every time for meals, the result is ridiculously expensive food. The hotel knows that their biggest asset is their location and they take good advantage of that. When we (Me, Wifey and Son) stayed there, a big group of nearly 25 people were staying and for the full evening they occupied every single table and chair at the terrace. If you are lucky and there's no big group staying at the hotel, you may find two empty chairs on the terrace and enjoy the view. There's a small private apple orchard on way that you can show to your kids. There's a small trail going into a nearby village which you can take. Coming to the hotel part, as I said there's nothing much to do there. The station and tunnel can be visited on any of your trips to Shimla or beyond, you only need to plan for 30 - 40 mins. You can go and see the Barog Station and Tunnel for excitement sake (Ghost of Barog etc. However, for those coming from faraway cities like Delhi after a drive of 6 -7 hrs., Barog has no attraction to offer. For those staying in Chandigarh and nearby cities, it is only 1-1.5 hrs drive and thus a plan can be made to go and relax with no sightseeing. In my opinion, a big part of experience at Barog Heights is dependent upon origin of the journey. Even a humble Tata Nano can do it in first gear so don't worry if you plan to take your own car. Contrary to what several people have described, although the approach to hotel is steep but there’s nothing that is frightening or scary. The hotel has a nice location, no doubts about that. The problem is not with the hotel, the problem is with the destination itself - Barog even the hotel management is aware of this and that's why they have done some clever tweaking to maximize their revenue.
